Europe’s Last Sunset! Everyday!

Por Luísa Salazar.

The Algarve is definitely one of the most beautiful places on Earth. However, for a long time, people didn’t even know that Portugal existed and of course the Algarve even less…

In the last couple of years the number of tourists increased substantially and the numbers of incoming tourist really reflect that! These are no longer just from the so called traditional markets, such as the UK, Ireland, Germany and the Netherlands. Some come from very far…
This year, I had the opportunity to travel to one of our major competitors in terms of holiday destination – Santorini in Greece. Santorini is in everyone’s top of mind when it comes to romantic destinations. It is indeed a very beautiful holiday spot in Europe and I can image that, in this particular moment, a lot of Europeans dream to travel once to Santorini.

I can confirm that it is in fact a very nice place, and the Greeks promote the Santorini Oia’s Sunset as the “most beautiful Sunset on Earth”. People travel from all over the world just to see Oia’s Sunset! When you are on the spot, you can see hundreds and hundreds of tourists (mainly from Asia) queuing in all the tiny narrow streets, just to see the “most beautiful” sunset in the world… Really?

Most of these tourists travel more than 15 hours in a plain just to go to Santorini. They go there for holidays, weddings, winter holidays, etc. Again, really? These tourist don’t know the Algarve that is for sure! Otherwise, they would not even consider going there! I was so surprised by all this but I get it! They’ve never been to the Algarve and they do not know what we have.

The experience I had made me think: Why not promote our Algarve’ Sunset? We promote the beach, the landscape, the food, the weather, the people, but why not the Sunset and Algarve’s Blue Sky?

It is so easy to take things for granted. What is already normal for us, it is not for others. The fact is that there is something really special and unique about our Sunset: blue sky going down to different colours such as pink, violet, yellow, white and also different shades of blue. All very normal to us, but definitely not for the tourists!

So why not promote the Algarve and start a new campaign with a striking slogan:
“The last and most colourful Sunset in Europe! Everyday!”
Enjoy!

A great article Luísa! Congrats!

I totally agree! As a photographer in the Algarve, there is something about the light in the Algarve that makes it unique. Something that makes that sky bluer than any other blue that can be found anywhere else.
And, as you say, it's not just a "One-Off" occurrence, it happens every day mostly every single day!!

The air is clean, the colours are dazzling and the location is also second to none, so yes...let's get the campaign going!!

All the best!
